Uh-deu-meh is a Korean dialect word which indicates direction but not a fixed coordinate. It is both a place and an emotion, not somewhere to arrive at but rather somewhere you instinctively gesture toward. In this book, one person interprets it through photography, and the other through writing. The fragments each gathered intertwined to form a terrain of emotion.

This zine transforms a 4-minute 1917 silent film into printed form from the perspective of 2024, juxtaposing still images with three layers of text. This composition, seemingly smooth yet misaligned, reveals the impossibility of translating colonial experience and historical trauma.

This prose poetry publication functions as a score for performance, where typography, spacing, color, and paragraph breaks guide the reader's breath, rhythm, and silence. The pilcrow (¶) was a red mark in medieval manuscripts indicating where to breathe and pause, but disappeared with the rise of print. The project revisits the pilcrow to recall what has become invisible in contemporary reading: bodily rhythm, manual labor, and the value of silence.

Just as ripe pomegranates burst to reveal gleaming seeds, scission reveals what lies hidden within and gives form to unheard voices.

About Us

Scission Press is an independent publishing house founded in Amsterdam in 2025. The word “scission” means cutting and division. A cut is not a simple separation. In the moment of cutting, forms are revealed, boundaries become sharper, and what was hidden comes into view. Scission Press pursues a form of publishing in which scattered fragments turn into language and lines of fracture create new resonance.

Founded and operated by critic, researcher, and publishing and cultural practitioner Dokyung (Doki) Ha, Scission Press questions institutional norms and explores critical voices and experimental practices. Through publishing, a space is created where people, ideas, and disciplines can resonate with one another beyond boundaries.

Publications from Scission Press are not finished endpoints but living processes. Work unfolds collaboratively across poetry and prose, photography and essays, interviews and criticism, together with writers, critics, designers, curators, translators, and researchers. Each book extends into exhibitions, workshops, readings, and collective research, becoming another site for imagining, discussing, and remembering together.

Scission is not an ending but a beginning. Through the act of cutting, new ways of relating, caring, and publishing are sought, along with the possibilities that emerge in the space between.
